Maine Coon male or female: which to choose

«Male or female» is asked more often than any other question, and the difference between them is smaller than people think. The main difference is size; the rest depends on the individual cat and on how it is lived with.

Size is what really differs

An adult male weighs twice as much as a female, and it shows in everything: the tray, the carrier, the food bill, the space on the sofa. If your home is small or the cat will travel often, a female is simply more practical. Check the weight by month on the calculator.

Character: where the breed ends

Males are said to be «more affectionate», females «more independent». Within the breed this is a tendency rather than a rule: a calm male and a calm female differ from each other less than two males from different litters do. Look at the particular kitten and ask the breeder what it is like in the litter — that is more accurate than any generalisation.

Marking and heat

Both are solved the same way. An unneutered male may start marking; an unspayed female comes into heat. Neutering and spaying at a suitable age usually settle the question — and if the kitten is bought as a pet rather than for breeding, they are part of the terms anyway. How pet differs from breed.

Price

Sex barely affects the price: the parents, their titles and the litter move it far more. The spread within a single litter is often wider than the gap between a male and a female. Kitten prices right now are calculated from what is available.

So which one to take

If you want a big cat and have room for one, take a male. If compactness and easy travel matter, take a female. If neither settles it, choose by the kitten, not by the sex.
