Maine Coon weight: everything you need to know
The Maine Coon is one of the largest domestic cat breeds. Kittens are born weighing about 100-150 grams but grow much faster than other breeds. By 3 months a Maine Coon kitten can weigh 1.5-2.3 kg, comparable to an adult cat of a small breed.
Growth features of Maine Coons
Maine Coons have a long growth period. Unlike most breeds, which reach maturity at 1-2 years, Maine Coons keep growing until 3-4 years. Most weight gain happens in the first year of life, after which growth slows but does not stop.
Factors affecting weight
A Maine Coon's weight depends on several factors: genetics (parents' size), nutrition quality, health and living conditions. Males are usually much larger than females — the difference can reach 3-4 kg in adults.
When should you worry?
If your Maine Coon's weight differs from normal by 15-20%, it's a reason to see a veterinarian. Being underweight may indicate digestive problems or parasites, while being overweight may indicate improper nutrition or a sedentary lifestyle.
